REVIEW OF GIVING IT UP BY AMBER LIN

HOLY SHIT THIS BOOK IS GOOD!

Two years ago Allie was raped by her best friend. This rape causes so much emotional damage to Allie that once a month she goes to a club picks out the guy she thinks will treat her the worst and fucks him. She isn’t into dating or relationships she just wants to be fucked and treated like shit because she believes that is what she deserves and also to remind herself what men really are. She wants a monthly reminder that saying “no” to a man means nothing. The rape also results in a pregnancy and Allie is now the mother of a two year old little girl – a good mother.

One night she picks a guy named Colin who refuses to treat her badly and instead acts like he cares about her. This causes all kinds of mixed emotions for Allie but before long she and Colin are in a relationship.

Colin isn’t exactly an upstanding citizen and is pretty screwed up himself. He’s fucked up, she’s fucked up, his family is fucked up, her friend is fucked up, everyone is fucked up – it’s like a character study in fuckedupedness.

Before long Colin takes complete control of Allie but not in a “where the fuck were you last night” sort of way but in a “let me know when you go out so I can make sure you are ok” sort of way. The interesting thing about that to me is this loss of control is exactly what Allie needs at the time. For the first time in her life the weight of the world is not on her shoulders and she actually feels free. I thought Amber Lin did a great job with that because it is one of my favorite themes and something you don’t see often but is very true. Sometimes giving up control can be liberating.

This book is listed as BDSM but it really isn’t – at least not in the traditional sense. Allie doesn’t really like rough sex but needs it as a reminder and Colin doesn’t really want to hurt her but wants to give her what she needs. Because of this the sex scenes aren’t really about sex but about character development and a window into Allies very tortured soul.

Amber Lin is an incredible writer and there is so much more to this book. It has suspense, mystery and some romance. This is the first romance novel I read where I had no idea what was going to happen. I didn’t even know if the hero and heroine would end up together or not.

I love flawed heroines and Allie is as flawed as it gets and I really liked the way Amber Lin wrote her character. Allie doesn’t have any ambitions or desires for success because she is so tortured and damaged she can’t possibly think beyond tomorrow. Plus she has such a low opinion of herself that she doesn’t believe she deserves any success or anything good in her life for that matter.

If you like alpha males you are going to love Colin because he is as alpha as it gets.  Amber Lin did a great job with his character as well, especially the dialogue – it was real male dialogue which is to say he didn’t talk much which actually added to his character development.

I am a novice romance reader and I have not read nearly as many romance books as all of you who will read this but I know what I like and I know a good book and this is one of the best books I have read in a while. I really think you will like it.

  1. I… am going to have to read this book. I’d heard people mention it before, but hadn’t really looked into what it was about. But it is definitely on my TBR now.

I like reading books with characters who are as or more fucked up than myself and get their happy ending. It gives me hope. Probably not healthy, but I don’t care. XD

  2. Great review RM. It’s not my usual fare for reading BUT I’m evolving as a reader and have even added some BDSM stuff lately……I’ve sent for the sample read of this book and will give it a shot. I quite enjoyed Shades of Grey……trilogy and that was fairly dark and angsty. Your review…….makes me VERY curious. Thank you for writing such a fine review and sharing it with us greedy readers!

  3. Just for the record, I hate you all ;) . I’m just kidding, but I will never crawl out from under my TBR pile if y’all don’t cut this out. Fine! I bought it, but I am reading Ruthie’s book and Selena’s book first :) .

      • I really don’t doubt that I will like it. Your recommendations have been spot on thus far. There just isn’t enough time in the day to read everything I want to read– even when my body hates me and I don’t sleep. I am trying to make up for all of those years when I didn’t have enough time to read anything that wasn’t written by Eric Carle or Dr. Seuss :) . A lot of really good books were written during those years and now I am finding out about new authors. Ginger’s getting antsy. She needs to go to Malta ;) .

  4. I’ve read this one, RM. I love dark, the darker the better, romances with flawed characters, but I wasn’t sure if I would like Giving It Up. Especially considering that I loved the hero and THEN found out what his flaw really was (don’t worry, I won’t tell!). But I did very much enjoy Amber’s story. Definitely one to be considered if you don’t want the typical fairy tale characters but still like a hot, happy ending. :)

      • Shoot……I am now curious about what that flaw is……..I just know I’ll have to read the whole darn thing now!

        • Same here. I was going to read it anyway, but now I’m extra mad I don’t have any money to buy it immediately lol

          • Jessica Scott will be doing a give away for this book on her site. I will find out when

          • If you could find out and pass the info along that would be most appreciated. :D

  5. I loved this one! It was dark, edgy, gritty. It was actually perfect Lifetime movie material. The things this girl went through, holy crap! How about that final reveal she did? The reason why she doesn’t trust cops? I came out of my chair screaming WTF!

  6. Great review, RM. Just read the first two chapters on Amazon, and dammit, I wanted to keep on reading! But I couldn’t buy it, says not available yet, maybe it’s just in NZ :(

  7. Great review. I have heard lots of buzz about this book, but wasn’t sure how I would feel about the whole *looking to be hurt on purpose* thing. I don’t mind dark, but I will cry if they hurt too much. You made my mind.up, at least I’ll check it out.

    • I had the same reservations but it is really good as part of the story and she isn’t into getting hurt bad.

  8. Thank you RM so much for recommending this on your FB page. I have read it and HOLY SHIT! is right. This is her Debut Novel! What great great writing. When I started this story, it looked to the heroine that Colin was perfect. He seemed to know what she needed and was willing to go to great lengths for her; including being rough even when he didn’t want to. I am old enough to know that no one is perfect, so I kept reading. Then when Colin’s secrets are revealed, Holy Shit again! And really, there is no real BDSM, no real pain like is done in BDSM. This heroine seeks the roughness to help her numb out to the world and get some emotional relief.
The depth of characters just blew me away, I understood what was making them ‘tick’ .. When the book could have ended, there was more story, that made the characters more real. The last third of the book seemed like thats what would really happen in life, not some fairytale.
This author is on my autobuy list, and there is only one other author I have to autobuy, and you all know who that is.

  9. Mate, I think you’re mixing up BDSM with S&M. S&M is a subset of BDSM but not the whole by any means.

I think I’ll have to read this form your description. It sounds like a good read.

    • Sounds like an interesting book, I hope at the very least that the main male character when he doesn’t like some guy kicks the shit out of him, or if he confronts her rapist takes him apart piece by piece rather then turning him over to the police all nicely tied up (the virgin river series, which I generally liked, pissed me off to no end because of that factor..).

There is an interesting phenomenon in books, that if it has anything remotely implying or seeming to be like kink play, they label the book as such (prob figuring some of the magic that has hit 50 shades of gray will hit that book)….

The description doesn’t sound like S/M or anything close to it. Just to be a pain in the ass and a smart aleck to boot, I’ll give brief summary…

S/M generally refers to ‘the play’, things like whipping and other sensation type things. It kind of depends on the level, a couple where they spank one another may not be S/M , just a bit kinky.

B and D (bondage and Discipline) usually refers to tying people up *duh, I know* and to a certain extent in ‘training’ the ‘bottom’ or whatever. The reason people use BDSM is because many people combine the two things..and most people think of both when they even use the term S/M.

Then there is something parallel to this all, D/S or dominance/submission (note that I didn’t write it as D/s, which is how ‘authentic’ people write it,indicating the D is higher ranked then the S (d=dominant, S=submissive) since I am not authentic and a wiseass, I wrote it all in caps to piss them off *hah*). This is the power game portion of it, where one person “takes control”, it is about roles and power. Can simply be in play space, or as some do it, in various aspects of life, varying from controlling certain things to a lot of things. A lot of the romance novels are more about this, where the dominant takes over the others life and so forth. Among other things, outside play space it can involve punishments for misbehavior and so forth. The contract Christian uses in 50 shades of gray is very much D/s, where he controls the subs and metes out punishment if they don’t perform right and so forth.

In most of those books, in any event, it usually is about a dominant guy (not too many female dominant characters, least not that I have read) who ‘takes charge’ and so forth, Kirsten Ashley’s “Knight” comes to mind. This book sounds a bit D/S, where the alpha male kind of ‘takes charge’.

Going to put this one on my list, too busy in the land of Werewolves and vampires in Patricia Briggs universe (with the mechanic of my dreams, Mercy Thompson),but will try it.

      • NJBill, which scene are you talking about? When Jack shot and killed the druggie who was going to kill Mel? Or when he beat the shit out of Paige’s ex-husband? Did we read the same series?

        • They do that, but in the book there are plenty of times when they just tie the bad guy up and give him over to the cops, more times then I can recall (I read virgin river a while ago)……there are several times when creepy ex’s stalk their old wives I recall, the gal who ends up hooked up with the guy who cooks in Jack’s bar when her creepy ex shows up, it ends up meekly turning them over to the cops. When jack shoots the druggie, he had no choice, and with paige’s ex likewise there wasn’t a choice.

My point is this is a town full of ex military and ex cops, and they aren’t likely to be so nice, it is why I like books like Kirsten Ashley’s, when the guy gets the person who hurts there loved one, they act like a guy would and want to take it out of them.

          • Paige is the woman who hooks up with the cook, Preacher, and when her ex attacks Paige and shoves a very pregnant Mel down in the street, Jack beats the shit out of him. Wow, I really strongly disagree with your characterization of the men in that series. Violence is not the answer to every situation.

          • Diane-
I would have to go back and read the books, but I recalll my reactions when reading them, same in other romance novels. Whether it is the right thing to do or not, in situations like I am talking about most men’s first reaction would be to kick the crap out of whoever threatened their loved ones/family’s/themselves…..I think it is one of the things that is the difference between women and men.

I remember watching the movie “The Great Escape” with my wife and also with other women, and they couldn’t understand why the prisoners kept on trying to escape, despite the possibility of being killed doing so, it is a very different mindset.

Doesn’t mean that the reaction is right or wrong, just saying that is the way many men are wired, when you get into fight or flight territory men don’t react with temperance.

          • So we are at a crossroads. Do authors continue to write romance for women, when it makes up well over 50% of paperback fiction sales or do they change it to try and draw in a male audience? A male audience that probably will never buy much romance anyway. I understand WHY you don’t enjoy that kind of male. I also understand why RM doesn’t enjoy alot of male dialogue. But honestly, I don’t want to read a romance if it is the way you described. It is fiction! Not real life! We are advancing a story and meeting emotional needs for the reader. And again, I disagree with you about men not reacting with temperance. Navy Seals and Army Rangers are the baddest mother fuckers out there. It doesn’t get more alpha. But they are in control. If their mission is to not act, not react until they get a go, nobody can provoke them. And nothing scares me more than a mother defending her young so I think women are fiercer than men. OK, I guess we will agree to disagree but Robyn Carr kicks ass and her alpha males are perfect. Just saying…

  10. @Pat, this is for you, if you like the dark edgy gritty stuff. Really a story of psychological healing.

      • Now you know why my love life was so pathetic and why people were surprised I actually was able to a)date and b)get married…….I am a fucked up delta male……. which means I want to be dark and edgy and mean at times but can’t figure out how to do it…….

  11. Excellent review. Makes me want to buy the book, which is exactly what a good review should do! Nicely done.

  12. This is one great review!

Actually your one liner on fb about this book was enough for me to go buy it. Of course, its not available here!!! Grrrr this is happening too often! I would buy it in paperback but its only out in ebook i think.

    • Sigh, so i went all techie on you and downloaded the pdf from ebookromance or whatever the site is and transferred to my Kindle and the font is TINY!!! I should know better, really I should! Note to self, next time stick to nagging the author to get it available in Europe too on Kindle!

All of a sudden i have so many great books to read and so little time: Pamela Clare’s Defiant is up next – I have been waiting four years for this book and its finally here! Then About Last Night, Selena’s book, Maya Banks, Elizabeth Hoyt’s Thief of Shadows plus the 120 TBR paperbacks and 40+ ebooks on my Kindle. I used to read 20 books a month and now hardly manage 5. I will never catch up.

      • Well if you would quit your job and stop watching soccer – excuse me football – you could get all of your reading done. And shoe shopping – stop that too.

        • If you use CALIBRE and convert the PDF to MOBI and then do the free Kindle via email attachment you should get a more manageable font size……just saying…..

      • Luci, I bought this from Loose Id and then emailed it to my Kindle and it was fine. I don’t remember if I had to adjust it or not. Does you Kindle have the font changes option?

        • Cannot change pdf fonts on it though LG. i downloaded Marie Force book in pdf once and the font was smaller thsn usual but readable- i never adjust font size in the other ebooks i buy. Giving It Up font though is ridiculously tiny. What’s Loose ID?

          • Loose-ID is a publishing company specialized in erotic romance (loose-id.com). you can buy and download books from their authors at their site and it seems that Amber Lin is one of them. I’ve read several ebooks from them, and they have a very wide variety. One of my favorites christmas romance is from one of their authors, though I blush every time I read it.

      • Luci , I had trouble with pdf’s that are drmed not having adjustable font, and am thrilled now that I can read them on my iPad on Bluefire :) … not helpful if you don’t have an iPad, but great nonetheless

    • Lucie– I couldn’t sleep last night/this morning so I was reading about Malta on Wikipedia. I have to go there now :) . I am totally in love with your little island. I want to see where they discovered the fossil remains of the pygmy hippos and pygmy elephants. The pictures of Blue Lagoon Bay were incredible. That’s my new mental happy place when Ginger gets upset ;) .

    • Hi Luci, we seem to have a lot of the same books! Received Maya Banks yesterday, also Joann Ross ( Moon Shell Beach). I only have about 50 pages of Selena’s book left, all I can say is OMG. What a ride! don’t work too hard today. You are an honorary American after all! :-)

      • Hope you had a great day Pat! I didn’t receive the Maya Banks book yet. It is marked as August on my pre orders list- yep i keep a list, hopeless hopeless memory. Was it released early? Or maybe it is being released later in Europe.

  13. Great review! Sounds very interesting. I have to read Mrs. Robbins’ book first, then I have to read Mrs. Knox’s books, and then I’ll go searching for this one but that’s going to be after my exams. Please, try not to post more great reviews this week.

  14. Excellent review, RM! It definitely sounds like something I would enjoy, and once I dig out from under the current stack…and BUY A FRICKIN’ EREADER…

I know. I’m the only person on earth who doesn’t have one, but I DID! Honest–bought a Rocket ebook reader in 2000 and used it for years. Finally gave it to a friend a few years ago. Of course, it was about the size of Miriam-Webster’s unabridged dictionary…

G’night, all. Hope everyone in the states has a wonderful happy and safe 4th. We’ll be attending a family barbecue during daylight and sitting on our daughter’s deck after dark to watch one of the largest fireworks shows in northern California. And then, we’re riding our bicycles home. In the dark, but the traffic is so bad it’s impossible to drive afterwards. Wish me luck…I”m not so good on a bike!

    • I read them on my phone, Amazon and Kindle have free apps that work great, can blow up the text and I am all set..

    • Kate, I never thought I’d love my Kindle as much as I do. I also have a Kobo, because there are some books I can’t get on Amazon, but come in the epub format. I love that I can buy books right on my Kindle without being near a computer. My husband hopes that no shoe-company will catch on to this. LOL

Have a safe and fun day, Kate. Sending you Canukian luck.

      • Selena, I’m with you. Was very reluctant to get a Kindle, but we were traveling so thought it would be helpful. I now can’t imaging living without it! It goes everywhere with me, in case I have a minute to ready. Have convinced friends to get one! The best/worst part…60 seconds…you have a book!

        • We do some traveling as well, and we would always bicker about how heavy my two suitcases were because one of them basically held a lot of books. LOL

Also comes in handy when I’m line at the check-out counter, doctor office, etc. makes waiting not as annoying. I’m too hyper to just sit around or stand still and not be doing something.

          • I still love my books but the Kindle does come in handy on vacation. I too used to have a separate book bag. I also love that no matter where I am, I can read my local newspaper. I know, vacation, right? But I can’t function in the morning unless I have read the paper.

      • I have an iPad and an android phone that I read on , and have Kindle/Kobo/Nook/ereader/iBook/Bluefire/Aldiko apps on the combined gadgets. I can do so much with the iPad, that I wouldn’t like using a dedicated reader…basically , I consider the iPad to be a reader that does a lot of other stuff too.

    • ARe you in Redding today Kate? Best fireworks in the.STATE! I always read RM’s recommended books cause they’re always good. Happy 4th to all.

    • I’ve had several different readers, including Ebookwise (I liked the back lighting but it became very obsolete), 2 different Sonys, Nook, Ipad, and for the past 1.5 years a Kindle. Kindle is the easiest I’ve found. I use Calibre (which is free) to convert if I need to convert to MOBI. I use free email converts to Kindle. Nook has come out with a Glow Reader and it intriques me…..it is calling to me BUT I don’t want to start buying from B & N. I want to keep my Library at Amazon/Kindle. I can also convert anything to MOBI and hook up the Kindle to my computer and transfer the MOBI file. This works great as well. Ipad reads fine but the darn thing gets a bit warm! I loves my Kindle and can hardly wait to see what Amazon comes up with next. My daughter has the Fire and says it’s not too good for reading ebooks so I’m not planning on that.

    • You live in Costa Rica? My son went there once and can’t wait to go back! gorgeuous country!

Wow RM, you are quite international!!!
      Happy Fourth All!!!

      • I’m a city girl. I live in San José, 15 minutes from downtown. Arenal volcano is really beautiful, it is located up north, the town’s name is La fortuna and the city is San Carlos, which is about 3 hours by car from San José. When did you came here?

          • Two years ago and we stayed at the foot of the volcano. It was incredible. Every night we would sit and watch the lava flow. All of the water in the hotel was hot because of the lava. We went into La Fortuna and had a blast. Great little town with very friendly people. One of the best vacations ever.

          • Yes, it’s one of the most touristic places of the country, there are hot springs all around the volcano area. I’m glad you enjoyed it.

  15. Good Morning everyone! Happy 4th! To all in the US.
    RM, great review.
I’m moving it up on the never ending TBR pile!
Thank heavens for ebooks, or I would be screwed.

  16. Since 5am I made shrimp salad, coleslaw, pea salad,2 salad dressings, cut up strawberries for shortcake, and cut up and am marinating pork and beef tenderloins for shis-kabobs. And now my washing machine is fucked up,have to fix it or go braless today!
I’m on fucking vacation dammit! Why do I have to do all the damn work? Because… No one else can cook it right! Thats right, I am the queen bitch when it comes to cooking and My family knows it!
Have a nice fucking day! stay safe and enjoy the festivities!
Oh and its 90′ at 9am going up to 100′. So I’m fucking hot!!

    • Sounds delicious! What time should I show up?
And you certainly are fucking hot! Work it baby! Marinate braless!!!!

      • We will be eating between 3 and 4. Come on over! Everyone is welcome, I make enough food to feed an army!
My motto: If you leave my house hungry,it’s your own damn fault!

        • Lol! I’m cooking and cleaning in a light and thin tank and panties! That is as naked sunbathing as I will get!
Have you seen that pick of the old lady with the bikini and large u shapes under the boobs from tanning topless? Well, that would be me! Lol

  17. Enjoyed your review, RM. I don’t read much contemporary romance let alone BDSD, but this sounds like it really has substance compared to what else is currently being touted as awesome (book name will go unmentioned!) Thanks for the review. I will pass it along!

  18. Hey RM and people, hope you are enjoying your holiday! Looooong day here, glad its nearly over.

LB am glad you liked what you saw of Malta :D . You must come, will take you around!! Blue Lagoon is beautiful. Plus we have a very rich history, our temples are thousands of years more ancient than Stonehenge.

Skeletor Vixen you have no idea how hopeless i am techie wise. Everythign i touch freezes or does not work well. You need to know me to believe. I downloaded Calibre when i first bought Kindle but it did not come with Dummy instructions so i gave up.

Going around the house in the skimpiest of underwear sounds familiar. Cooking and cleaning though, on a holiday?? What’s that? Crazy granny you are my new heroine. We just returned from a weekend break and my husband cooked each and every time. I take my holidays very seriously.

RM, giving up work? Great idea! Will steal a bank instead to pay for my books and shoes. Oh right, give up football and shoes? I do not even have a comeback for that the thought alone is scary. They are my passion.

  19. Happy holiday to all my American friends. I wish I could join CG for supper – sounds really good! I think I might have frozen pizza….

Everyone please be extra careful today – I want to see happy faces tomorrow!

  20. PS: I wanna to to Costa Rica. And visit Lucie in Malta.

I have been to Florida: went to that place that RM says cannot be mentioned, along with some visits to shopping malls. Ahhh, I remember vacations like that…

  21. Great review RM! I am generally not into erotic romance, but this sounds interesting. Thanks for sharing your opinion of the book. It will go on my tbr list!

      • I’ve tried 3 times to sign up at gravitar.com but they never send me an email so I can sign up. I am tired of trying, so I gave up. My writing is at a stand still at the moment. I never knew coming up with an interesting plot could be such a challenge! Also, keeping up with my toddler and life in general has gotten in the way of my creativity. I am hoping to focus more on my writing when Zoey starts school. Until then, I will be writing small bits at a time and trying to piece the story all together eventually.

          • That’s the whole problem, RM. I tried to sign up with gravatar by giving them my email but they never emailed me back to give me a password. I can’t get in touch with them to tell them my problem because when I try the link to email them it doesn’t work.

          • tell me what email you used to register with this site and tell me what you want your gravtar to be and i will fix it

  22. Just popped in to check e-mail and read the review…
“it’s like a character study in fuckedupedness”
I think THAT should be in the book of best RMisms…

I haven’t read this book and hadn’t made my mind up if I will try it…I will put it on my TBR list.

Had a great 4th – spent the day with my Mom and she had a great day being spoiled by the 2 grandkids and 3 “adopted” grandkids. Hubs and our BFF Hubs tackled her Honeydue list – my Dad was smiling down at us!

  23. I read it. A very good first book by Amber Lin. I don’t usually like first person writing but lately I’ve noticed a slew of first person books and I’ve actually enjoyed them, including Bared To You, Fifty Shades of Grey….., Easy, Knight, and now this book: Giving It Up. RM was right in the entire of his review. I can’t add to it except to say that it’s not as dark as I’d anticipated. It’s not light either. It’s real life and very believable. The writing is stellar. I’m hoping the writer plans additional books in the series to cover other characters; all of which are dysfunctional. Was this a love story? Yup. Nothing fluffy about it. It was gritty and dirty…….and real. Thanks RM for the recommendation.

  24. I’m not completely sure, but I think I just had my first lesbian experience ;) . I just got back from getting a mammogram, and my new girlfriend, Sheri, and I hit off. It has been a long time since I was single, but I think it is customary to take a girl out to dinner before feeling her up like that. My boobs haven’t seen that much action in a long time. Manbug has a lot to live up to now :) .

    • LOL, maybe the name thing confused her? She thought she was doing a really thorough self-exam? Did she at least say she would call you? Or do you think you were a one-mammo-stand?

One of my good buddies is a total boob man and doesn’t understand why men can’t be hired to be mammogram breast placement assistants (his job title, not mine).

      • LOL, Diane. She never said she would call. I felt dirty and used. Just like a woman (I’m trying to start a new man/woman argument ;) ). I kept thinking that her job could be really awkward and uncomfortable depending on whose boobs she was working with. It is a very up close and personal job. We all know how I feel about my personal space :) .

      • You know the men say that, but after 1day, after all thebhard-ons, blue balls and self-hand jobs, they wouldn’t like it to much. 8O

  25. Now that I read back over my comment, it doesn’t sound scandalous enough. I think I should have embellished it a little :) . Did I mention that Sheri put pasties on my boobs? That’s actually true. There was Jell-O involved, too (slight artistic license– it was ultrasound jelly, but it was warm and I was topless ;) ).

      • NO! Don’t you have to work up to that sort of thing. Christian Grey told me that you have to start out slowly with the fuzzy ones first. I don’t even thing those are officially nipple clamps– probably more like nipple snuggies :) .

          • I would have to imagine that having a mammogram (getting one’s tits squeezed to a point where you think they’ll burst) would be much more painful than nipple clamps. I’m getting one tomorrow……I’ve heard that smaller breasts are tougher to get squeezed and therefore it is more painful…….I just know it HURTS!

          • SV– my nipple clamp experience is sadly lacking, but I am not well-endowed and I did find the mammogram rather uncomfortable. It kind of made me not want to pursue real nipple clamps :) .

    • Why can’t they figure out a way to warm up the metal plates they squish you with? First you have to put your tit on an ice block and then they slam it between two pieces of metal. I bet if there were dickograms for men, the process would be totally different!

      • I had a dickogram once, at least that’s what the Dr. told me it was but it felt more like a blow job. Hey – I wonder if he was lying?

        • Are you telling me another man had your dick in his mouth and you didn’t ask to see his medical license?

          • He had on a lab coat. Now that you mention it it is weird that he asked me to come to his house for the dickogram.

          • Do you realize the risk you took? Your medical insurance might not pay for it!

          • I don’t even have a comment for this little exchange. I am using all of my mental abilities to come up with a response to my 8-yr-old who just asked why I was choking. :)

  26. The radiographer was called Sheri too? Way to go LB!! I sincerely hope you will not need to see her again in a long time (medically speaking of course).

Hiya RM and all, hope you are having a good day!

RM, any strip dance competition you have with anyone, doesn’t have to be Channing Tatum, i am not particular that way, I HAVE to be connected by webcam to watch!! I will transfer the money by paypal in real time :)

    • Lucie, you are supposed to tease him, not encourage him. I’m not sure if it’s wise to have him winning that competition or being paid for stripping of his clothes. He already has too much atention from women with this blog.

    • Lucie– yes, isn’t that odd? She forgot one of her r’s so it’s easy to tell us apart :) . The super weird part is that our birthdays are only days apart and her last name was almost the same as mine, too. Maybe Diane was right and she thought she was doing a self-exam. I don’t know what they pay her but it isn’t enough. I just kept thinking that there are probably some really unattractive boobs attached to grumpy people that come in there. I would guess that squishing someone’s boob doesn’t always bring out the best in them. It did for me, but I’m special like that ;) .

      • Oh and I forgot to mention that everything was good. I don’t have to have another one for 5 years. It is so nice because they tell you the big news before you leave the testing center now.

        • Yay for you LB!! You would have gotten the result from us before you left our hospital years ago :) .

Sherri must have been the in name when you were born :)

        • You gals are hysterical! RM, a dickogram? LOL LOL I should know better than to have anything to drink when I’m reading this blog.

Ladybug, so glad everything is in the clear.

I go for ultrasounds now, and they are not uncomfortable like those boob smashers.

  27. Wow…missed a lot this morning!!! Yes LB, those pasties hurt coming off too!! No mammogram for me, just had one, not till next year!!
Luci, did you see the shoes I sent you?? Well, I’m starving…going to eat some lunch….be back.. :)

  28. OK, the dickogram reminded me of a conversation I had once and I figure if I can’t bring it up on this blog, I can’t anywhere.
I got into a debate (nice, not heated) with a gay man over who gives a better blow job to a straight man, a woman or a gay man. He maintained that since he had a dick, he knew better what feels best to another man. My argument was that straight men also get off on the feel of a woman’s mouth and especially if they swallow, that technique alone wasn’t everything. My husband refused to be the judge, so it died an alcohol hazed death. But, if anybody knows of a truly bi-sexual man (so he would not have a preference one way or the other) who could tell us what he thinks, I would love to know. It reminds me of Andy Dick in the movie “Old School” when he uses a banana to teach the women how to give a bj.

      • Yeah, but if he’s gay and not a true, unbiased bisexual, will he really be able to give Diane the opinion she’s looking for? Am I being too girly when I think that it would be difficult for a man to judge the awesomeness of a blow job while separating it from his sexual preferences and/or emotion? I am not sure if I said that correctly, but you know– sex is better when you at least get it from the gender of person you find most attractive.

To make this a truly scientifically-sound test, you need a group of dyed-in-the-wool 50/50 bisexuals who have never been in love. That way you take the emotion and gender preference out of it. You know I am all about the scientific validity ;) . The only problem is that I don’t know any dyed-in-the-wool 50/50 bisexuals. Everyone I know seems to be firmly in one camp or another. All of my gay guy friends who attempted heterosexual relations were pretty disappointed in all aspects of it. They like their blow jobs from someone else with a dick ;) .

        • He just emailed me back and said this “it depends on how good the person is at giving a blow job. I have had good and bad blow jobs from men and women”. Makes sense to me but it’s not all scientific like Ladybug wants.

          • I am just trying to protect the integrity of the study. You don’t want some nutjob coming on here and questioning it :)

          • And yeah, I think to answer my earlier question– I was being too girly…..

          • LOL. I miss Karen and her cheerfulness. I deleted her best comments Ladybug.

          • Oooooh– don’t piss off the man with the edit button. Got it ;) . Now do all of my and Diane’s comments look weird out there in cyperspace by themselves? Do we look like raving lunatics just screaming at no one? I’m not saying that it isn’t accurate (at least for me)– I am just wondering :) .

          • No the comments I deleted you guys never saw. They were the ramblings of a woman who needs serious help and it would have pissed off Ginger so I deleted them.

        • Word of mouth is that guys are better at it. :)

Seriously, you are being too girlie. Most guys I know don’t care about the gender of the mouth in question.

  29. Pat, wise one, you are correct– the pasties did hurt when the ultrasound tech (who, by the way, wasn’t nearly as nice or handsy as the mammogram tech) RIPPED them off my flesh. At least the pasties were cute. Mine were decorated with little flowers and one even had a ladybug on it :) .

    • You know I am all about being green and recycling. Before they rip them off they should ask if you plan to do any exotic dancing in the next 24 hours and if you say, yes, that is your night job, they should let you keep them!

      • LOL– where were y’all while I was getting all of this done this morning? These are all fantastic ideas. Now I feel like I need a do-over, but I don’t want Sheri to think that I am chasing her :) .

        • Just play it cool and act like you just want her profesional opinion. Text her pictures of your tits and say “I just want to know if they still look healthy” and maybe that will spark a friendship.

          • LMAO– yeah, that’s a great idea! I am totally going to do that. Should they just be tit pictures with nothing else? What about one with my face and tits? I could do the pouty, FB self-portrait thing

          • No just tits at first then as time goes on you can send her a picture of your vagussy and say “I know this isn’t your expertise but what do you think?”

          • LOL
Okay, okay– no duck face. But I also have to draw the line at tits. No vagussy pictures– I am too classy for that (evidently I’m not too classy for tit pictures ;) ).

      • I had a friend who forgot to take them off, and went directly to play golf. She said after two or three people asked her if she was cold, she figured it out!!!
Nobody ripped mine off, I took them off carefully my self!! When you have digital mammograms, the pasties go directly on your nipples. They have little tiny metal studs in them. kinky!!!

        • How did I not get those? They sound awesome and totally reusable at my night job. Notice I didn’t say day job because I don’t want to be the after lunch stripper ;) .

          • LMAO! My husband is demanding to read this thread, because I’m laughing so hard.

The boob fondling for a mammogram is not as bad as that other test, where they put the condom on the probe. Okay, must shut up, must remember, I’m not anonymous. LOL

  30. Holy shit! You all are fucking crazy! Love it!
When did they start using pasties? Every mammogram I’ve had my nips were out there for all that touchy feely.
But they do warm the plates with warm towels prior to insertion of the boobs.
And where the hell was I when you all discussed the stripping. I missed it. I too would pay through paypal to see it live!

    • Granny– they were just little stickers because I have a giant freckle on one boob and there was a spot in question on the other. They wanted to mark them. My nipples were completely uncovered so the pasties weren’t very effective for that purpose.

RM feels bad when the strippers finish their dance and likes to help them clean up their ones and clothes. I might have taken a pole dancing class once upon a time and often feel the need to defend the athleticism and difficulty of that profession. :)

      • Lol.ok I thought I missed something. I am all caught up.
When I had to be re-examined, they just used a marker to mark the spot. My boobs were hanging through holes in the table and smooshed and pulled to get the spot to show up for a biopsy. Then had to keep redoing it to find it on the exray.
And yes, it was benign lump.

        • Oooh are you talking about stereotactic biopsy where they leave the markers inside the breast when they are done? I’ve had two of those. During the first one the doctor said “Okay, we are going to leave a marker inside the breast so we know exactly where the tissue came from.” I said, “Great, is it a skull and cross bones?” His reply “Uh, no.” I’m guessing that was the first time someone asked him that question.

          • I’m pretty sure they stay forever, so they can compare the size of the lump to the previous test to make sure it hasn’t gotten bigger.

          • Not unless they are removed. They are really small but they can be detected by other tests – CT, ultrasound, mammograms, etc

      • Ladybug, I agree on the athleticism of pole dancers. At last year’s Romanticon (Ellora’s Cave conference), we had demonstrations and I actually tried my *ahem* hand at it. As I hung onto the pole, I could barely lift my legs up halfway, never mind the little flips and curls and splits and upside-downs they do. And when they started spinning the little disk I was standing on, oy, it was hard to look sexy. If I ever did.

        • Cris– I know exactly what you mean. I nearly gave myself a concussion during my very brief (1 hour at most) career as a stripper. Did they have you guys use the sticky hand stuff to make it easier to climb the pole?

  31. I leave here for an hour and the comments go crazy. Leaving for the night, tomorrow i will be lost.

I just had the ultrasound done and was just happy as all get out that all was okay. the stuff we are hearing nowadays is scary.

Now see RM I love your friend’s answer becaus eit confirms what i was thinking. I do not think you can say women do it better than men or vice versa. If you’re good you’re good, if not you need coaching :)

    • Nite Lucie.
Also, every man has his own likes and dislikes in receiving a blow-job. So, if the person giving the blow job does it the same way on multiple men, each 1 will have different degrees of liking it.

    • Lucie– I am so happy to hear that your ultrasound went well. It is nerve-wracking waiting on any test results.

      Goodnight!

      • Hi, Lucie, have a great evening.

A group of gals were talking about BJ’s one time, and one suggested sucking on a bunch of Altoids before the performance.

One of the gals, decided to use Listerine. Her husband told her to stop talking to us. LOL Apparently, it burned so much, he ran to the bathroom and had to rinse in real cold water and claimed he was still burning for a few days.

        Amateur. LOL

        • Don’t ever, and i mean NEVER let the man touch you after cutting up or eating alot of jalepeno peppers!! It was severel hours later, and mutiple hand washings, but let me tell you, it fucking burned!!!!

  32. The whole texting pictures of body parts makes me wonder—- has anyone here ever texted a naughty picture to someone?

There was no sexting or texting naughty pictures when Manbug and I were dating or first married. Now– things don’t look as great as they did when we were in our early 20′s and we see each other naked all the time. I see nothing to be gained from texting him a picture of anything I’ve got. Plus– I would probably accidentally text it to my dad or someone equally as horrifying.

    Pat, how do I make that big-eyed emoticon? You know I am a two-emoticon girl :) .

    • I don’t understand why people do that. If I texted a naked picture of myself she would yell at me and say “there’s a reason we have sex with the lights off” 8O

    • Manbug sees it everyday. I’m not even sure he would know what he was seeing if I texted him a picture of just one body part. I can picture him sitting in his office turning the phone every which way and asking the guys what they think it is. Then I would have to kill him :) .

      • LOL. That’s why I don’t get the sexy lingerie thing. I have seen my wife with her ankles behind her ears – panties aren’t going to turn me on.

        • I see your point, but I will have to ask Manbug to weigh in on this one because he does like sexy lingerie. He is a big fan of garter belts, but I am not so they rarely make an appearance.

Of course– with 2 babybugs and almost 15 years into our relationship, he’s also a big fan of awake ;)

          • LOL. Yeah I have reached the point in my marriage where we just get naked and have sex no need for sexy underwear.

  33. If my husband would ever read this he will likely kill me. But here goes, its to funny not to share…
He had a dream last night that we went to an “establisment for entertaining.” he couldn’t find anyone that could turn him on, but he watched me getting it on with 2 men at once. I asked him if that turned him on, and he told me no, he was pissed because I was getting off and he couldn’t. :-)
I can however, get him all hot, hard, and horny in the pantie or lipstick aisle of the store. I don’t wear lipstick, except for blowjobs. And he prefers red. ::8O

  34. Just got home from work. You ladies (and RM) have been busy today!!
I have news! I have a pic of a tortoise dick. I am emailing to RM, will post it at TRM in a few minutes. It is enormous.
Thats my contribution for the day :)

  35. Thanks so much to RM and all of you for checking out Giving It Up! This is my debut book, so I really appreciate anything and everything for getting the word out! Those of you who’ve read it already may be happy to know I’m working on Shelly’s story now. She needs some love :)

Oh, by the way, I ADORE the “character study in fuckedupedness” bit. RM gets me :) For a while there I considered making my author tagline “because fucked up people deserve a happy ending” but then I chickened out. Now, I don’t know. What do you think, too much?

  36. Amber Lin!! ***sqeee!!!**
What an awesome story! Did you see my comments on Goodreads for you??
I want to know too if shelly gets man #1 or man #2. I know you can’t tell :) but inquiring minds still want to know :)

    • Hi, Lady Godiva! I missed ‘em. Oh, I think you’ll like it. Actually I’ve kind of given it away already by saying that I have a plan for a third book… assuming the second one works out, and that one would be Philip’s book :) But we do get to see a lot more of him in Shelly’s book.

  37. I really hate that I am at work all day while all this action is going on.

@ LG – my mammogram is booked for next week. They do not tell you immediately – you have to contact your doctor’s office to see if all is well. My mother said any woman can do her own mammogram at home: first, go to the ktichen, remove all your clothing and sit there until you are cold. Then stick your hands in ice water and poke your breasts in various places. Open the refrigerator door, put your breast inside, and close the door repeatedly. Repeat with other breast. It is also preferable to have total strangers observe.

Men over 40 have to choose their doctor by the size of the docs fingers. Or, some won’t go at all. I tell you, I am a bad woman – I have little sympathy. We have been given the equivalent exam since we were mid-teens! Plus the breast squeezers after 40. Being a girl ain’t for sissies!

@ Diane – I asked a group of guy friends once what was the best blow job they ever had. The answer? “The one I’m currently getting.”

  38. Vagussy = { ( ) }
    cock = { |.| } leaning to the left { /./ } leaning to the right { \.\ }
    Skinny { ! } thick { | . | }
What do you think? Do these work or not?

  39. Have fun this morning! The babybugs and I are going to see a dinosaur exhibit. After that we are going to eat lunch at the Crayola cafe and shop for crayon-related crap we don’t need ;) .

    • A new box of untouched, fresh crayons is one of the joys of childhood. Hell, I still like to color so it is one of the joys of my delayed adulthood!

      • Who am I kidding? We’re going to the Crayola store for me. I am the weirdo that buys tons of extra crayons at back-to-school sales so that I always have fresh ones to color with when Girl Babybug and I have art time :) . I LOVE the 96 pack, but I always buy the 24 packs in the late summer because those are on sale. Maybe I’ll go crazy and get the big box today.

RM– please tell me that you aren’t going to banish coloring and crayon-related conversations the way you did laundry conversations :) .

        • No Ladybug but only because sometimes we have to write in crayon so Diane can understand what we are saying. The laundry and ironing rule is firm though.

          • (Sorry I meant to type it here but I got excited.)

            See! I told you!

          • LOL– thank goodness! I am not sure the constant chatter about BJs and vagussies (did I pluralize that correctly?) would be enough to bring me back here if crayon-talk was forbidden :) .

        • No worries, ladybug. Many many posts ago I shared my love of coloring (I have crayons in my house but no children. Hey, some kid could knock on my door and say, Lady do you want to color? It could happen!) And RM found a way to mock me. It’s how he explains science and world events to me so we are allowed to talk about coloring.

          • It totally could happen and you will be one of the few people prepared when that kid knocks on your door :) . I will take some pictures of the store and post them on FB for you. It is like heaven for crayon lovers.

          • Ok, I’m going to show you another side of me!!! I don’t like the 96 pack of crayons, because they always seemed like ” fake” colors . I like the smaller packs, and I like sharp points!

          • Ah but magenta and periwinkle are such cool colors and you only find them in the large packs.

          • Diane, magenta is one of my favorite colors too :) Cuz I get to see it in the spectacular sunsets in the mountains (not so much in the Mojave Desert though)

      • Personally, I am a Triceratops fan because one of my college biology professors discovered the only intact Triceratops skeleton found in the U.S. After hearing about it non-stop for a semester, it was hard not to love it. Of course that was also the class for which I had to carry around a plastic box with an entire cat skeleton for 4 months. We had to learn all of the bones and parts of bones and be able to assemble/disassemble it. That was a little creepy, but I still know all of the bone names (cat and human ;) ).

  40. Morning people. Hope you have a great day! My weekend is starting NOW!

    Enjoy the dinos LB.

Am researching places to visit on our trip to Scotland. Anyone been besides Esther? Already nagged her for tips :)

        • Lucie I am thinking of adding a page for recipes that everyone can share. Do you have a recipe from Malta you could share?

          • Will steal one from my husband’s website :) (he has a website totally dedicated to Maltese food). You know me, i hate cooking so the most you will get from me is a bolognese recipe and that’s Italian. You want the recipe plus photo by email?

          • I will send you a recipe and photo for the BBLs to cook, then i will also send you a pic of the typical Maltese delicious snack called pastizz (which is also the colloquial word used here for a woman’s private part because of the pastizzi’s shape). On second thoughts am sending you this photo now. The recipe will follow later.

          • RM, I can contribute some spanish food….how do you want to do it? should I email it to you?… I was thinking Gazpacho first, since it is so hot now… and it is healthy

  41. Ok everyone, don’t talk about me when I’m not here!! Our computer at home is down, and I’m at the library trying to catch up. The guy fixing our comp. told hubs how to hook up the wireless , so it will work without the main comp. Course he doesn’t see the urgency!!! I will try and be back when I can. Luci….when are you going to Scotland. closest we got was Wales, but it’s on our list! Hopefully be back soon!!! :(

    • Hey Pat, nag whoever you need to nag to get back online real soon!! We are going in August which apparently will still be a wet month but better than the rest of the year, at least i hope.

  42. Trying to write more of my book but am at a standstill in the plot. Writing is alot damn harder than I thought! Not giving up though!
RM – the last I read about Lexie writing she was at 50,000 words. That’s unbelievable! How is her writing going? Is she still asking you for your advice on male dialogue? The drapes and curtians thing cracked me up! If I let my husband help me write he would make the whole book about nothing but sex. Lol. He thinks that’s why I read romance books, when in reality I read for the story and the sex is a plus but not the majority of the book. ;)

  43. RM, how did you find this book? I’m wondering since it is a debut novel for the author. Do you usually get your reads from the authors? how do you know if it is worth your time reading it? I see lots of recommendations online for good reads, but I know that they won’t all appeal to me.

    ??

  44. So, RM, this is my first comment. :)
As I said on Lime’s blog, I have read several of your posts before, but never commented.
Fabulous review! I have this one on my list to read already and very excited to read it. It sounds like a fantastic read. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and the recommendation.
